Creating an original music/theater piece takes time!
And money. And patience. Even when it’s based entirely on historical fact, and includes some of the best (and most beloved) music ever made.

Workshop Development Plan for “There’s A Riot Going On!”

  • A one-day table read of the newly revised script. Hearing this performed aloud will allow us to assess the clarity of the storytelling, the dramatic arc, and the integration of music and text. Immediately following this session, David Driver (creator) and Ain Gordon (dramaturg) will spend one week revising the material, incorporating insights from the reading.

  • A second table read will bring the revised script and score back to the room, allowing Driver, Gordon and Music Director Ann Klein to evaluate how the changes function in performance and identify areas for further development.

  • Two days of rehearsal, during which the performers, musicians and designers will work on staging, musical interpretation, and performance dynamics. The process will culminate in an invitation-only presentation of the work in progress, attended by a small audience of friends, colleagues, artistic collaborators, potential producing partners, and industry guests.

In the course of this presentation we’ll create a brief preview of what the fully-produced show will look and feel like. This 3- to 5-minute segment will include all on-screen graphics, light effects and scenic design, and will be filmed for the project’s manager, Laura Colby, to share with potential presenters, as well as for the show’s producers to share with potential future investors. As part of this same presentation, the full show will be performed as a semi-staged, script-in-hand reading, to allow these same individuals to see the entire piece.
